Jacksonville Naval Base History -
Naval Station Mayport was founded as a result of the Hepburn Act. In 1938, top officials began searching for a southeastern naval and air base, the location of which Naval Station Mayport now occupies. Officially commissioned in 1944 for World War II, Jacksonville’s Naval Station Mayport was officially decommissioned at the end of the war in 1948. Today, Naval Station Mayport is being reconstructed to house a state-of-the-art nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
